Mr. Norman Ray Wooten, 91, died Sunday, August 4, 2013.
The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 pm in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Wooten was born on May 13, 1922 in Greene County, to the late John H. and Sudie Cunningham Wooten. He went to grammar school in Snow Hill, and at age 10 his family moved to Ballards Crossroads. He finished grammar school and graduated from Bell Arthur High School in 1939. After graduating from high school he went to Smithdeal Massey Business School in Richmond, Virginia. During World War II he served in the United States Army and took basic training at Fort Jackson, SC, serving in the South Pacific and was part of the America Infantry Division. Before leaving service he received his commission as a 2nd Lt. of Infantry.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Myrtle Harris Wooten; son, Norman Ray Wooten, Jr. and his wife, Catherine, of Farmville; and a granddaughter, Amy Lynn Wooten, Nashville, TN.
Mr. Wooten served on the Bell Arthur Water Corporation from April 1977 until April 1989. He also served on the Pitt County Development Commission from 12 years. He worked with the NC State Motor Club for 45 years. He enjoyed his work and made many friends. He was a member of Ballards Crossroads Community Baptist Church where he served as Superintendent of Sunday School and taught Senior Sunday School class. He also served as deacon at his church.
In 1987 he moved to Greenville and joined Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Wooten was preceded in death by several brothers and a sister, Bob, Wayne, John, Jim, Clifton and Catherine. He is survived by brothers, Carl, Bill, Winston; and sisters, Ruth Greyiel, Selma Rogers, Mamie Smith Williams, and Margaret Orehli.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 pm until the funeral hour at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
