Obituary for Dr. John Bernard Vick

Dr. John Bernard “Bernie” Vick, 86, died on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Cypress Glen Retirement Community. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 12 at 2:30 pm at Oakmont Baptist Church with Dr. Greg Rogers officiating. The family will hold a private burial.

A native of Conway, North Carolina, Dr. Vick was born on January 15, 1932 to the late Henry and Lillie Vick. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1953 and Bowman Gray School of Medicine (Wake Forest) in 1957. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1960 at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital and the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C.

Following his military service, Dr. Vick completed his training in general, thoracic, and vascular surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, Duke University, and Wake Forest University--Baptist Hospital. Dr. Vick and his family moved to Greenville in 1966, where he joined Pitt Surgical Associates. He introduced vascular surgery to the area and was the first to bring cardiovascular surgery to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Dr. Vick served as chief of the division of thoracic surgery at PCMH for thirteen years and trained many residents at the East Carolina Brody School of Medicine. The Bernard Vick M.D. Teaching Award for Excellence is given by the Brody School in honor of Dr. Vick. He was a talented, dedicated, and compassionate physician and teacher during his thirty years of medical practice.

Dr. Vick's faith in God was abundant and steadfast, serving as the catalyst for his life's work and goals. He and his family joined Oakmont Baptist Church in 1966, and he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. After he retired, he (often accompanied by his wife, Naomi) went on a number of medical and construction mission trips with the North Carolina Baptist Men, including trips to the Ukraine, India, Swaziland, Mozambique, Kosovo, and Honduras. He was also a faithful volunteer with Meals on Wheels in Pitt County for many years.

Throughout his life, Dr. Vick loved to be active, learn new skills, and master new challenges. In his youth, he rode and trained horses, played basketball in high school and in a semi-professional league, and played the trumpet in the Wake Forest Marching Band. After retirement, he continued to enjoy gardening and took up woodworking, brick laying, painting, writing, and ballroom dancing with Naomi. He was a state champion in badminton in the Senior Olympics and, with Naomi, went on many adventurous trips hiking, climbing, and rafting.

Above all else, Dr. Vick's greatest joy in life was his family. He married his beloved wife, Naomi, in 1958 and cherished their sixty years together. He dearly loved and was so proud of his children and grandchildren. His family treasures the memories of the time they shared together. Dr. Vick was fun-loving and kind, generous to a fault, and devoted to God and his family. He was so greatly loved and will be missed beyond measure.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Vick was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Henry Vick, in 2018.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Naomi R. Vick; his son, Robert Vick of Chapel Hill; his daughters, Susan Jameson and husband, John, of Lewisville and Mary Cavanagh and husband, Michael, of Greenville; and his grandchildren, Noah and Camille Vick, Emily, Abby, and Erin Jameson, Mattie Cavanagh Gibson and Jack Cavanagh.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Oakmont Baptist Church, 1100 Red Banks Road, Greenville NC 27858 or the Pitt County Council on Aging, 4551 County Home Road, Greenville NC 27858.
