Obituary for Grace Tripp Pate

Mrs. Grace Tripp Pate, 93, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2019.
The funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 11 AM at Wilkerson Funeral Home by her son-in-law, Kevin O’Brien. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Pate was born and raised in Pitt County and was the oldest of four children born to the late Thomas Jarvis and Nina Elaine Tripp.
After attending college at ECTC, Grace was employed by the U.S. Civil Service and moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked at the Pentagon during World War II. After the war, she returned to North Carolina and worked in Snow Hill as a teller for a local bank. That’s where she met the love of her life, Willie Murphy Pate.
They were married on June 12, 1949 at Red Oak Christian Church and had four children, Nancy, Kathryn, Billy and Mary Grace.
Once the children were older, Grace began to work outside the home again and was employed as a bookkeeper with Honeycutt Beauty Supply for many years. She was also an active member of Red Oak Christian Church for her entire life.
Grace loved to cook and was never happier than when she was in her kitchen preparing delicious food for her family and friends. Special requests were always welcomed, especially from her seven beloved grandchildren. Her sister, Mimi, said it best: “Grace always gave more than she received. Always!”
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Willie Murphy Pate; her daughter, Nancy Pate Cochran; sister, Jean T. Manning; and brother, Jarvis Tripp.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Pate Allen and husband, Tim, of Winterville, and Mary Grace Pate O’Brien and husband, Kevin, of Apex; a son, Billy Pate and wife, Simone, of Greenville; grandchildren, Tim Allen, Jr., Ted Allen and wife, Nichole, and Tyler Allen and wife, Sarah, all of Winterville, Jay Cochran and wife, Heather, of Florida, Will Pate of Raleigh, Molly O’Brien of Raleigh, and Riley O’Brien of Apex; six great-grandchildren, Emily Grace Allen, Clara Allen, Aubrey Allen, Pate Allen, Luke Allen and Isabella Cochran;sister, Mimi Tripp Denton of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm.
The family wishes to thank all of her caregivers over the years, especially the staff of Spring Arbor Assisted Living and Pruitt Health Hospice. Memorials may be made to Red Oak Christian Church or other charity.
