Obituary for Jean Jones Garris

Jean Jones Garris, 84, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, June 7, 2019, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service will be conducted on Monday, June 10, at 2:00 P.M. at the Emerald Isle Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Freddie Braswell. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Jean, a native of Pitt County was the daughter of the late Roy and Irene Meeks Jones. Jean worked for 35 years with the ECU School of Education as Executive Assistant to the Dean. She was always there to support her co-workers and advised many students with their schedules and any other needs. She served as President of the NC State Employees Association District 65. After her retirement a Scholarship was established in her honor by the ECU School of Elementary and Special Education Jean was a member of Red Oak Christian Church in Greenville for many years until she and Hubert retired and moved to Emerald Isle. There she became a member of Emerald Isle Baptist Church. She loved singing in the choir, which began as a child at the age of 4. Jean was a tireless servant who never hesitated to help in any way, and served on numerous committees.
She supported her husband Hubert in his career for many years with Pitt County Farm Bureau Insurance. After her retirement she became a member of the Pitt County Farm Bureau Board and served as Chair of the Women's Committee and was a State Representative for Pitt County Farm Bureau. Jean was instrumental in bringing Agriculture into the classroom in Pitt County Schools and initiated Pitt County Farm Bureau in becoming a major sponsor of the Teacher of the Year. She was also secretary of the Greenville Optimist Club for 8 years and received an Outstanding Membership Award.
Jean will be fondly remembered for her love of family. She was affectionately known as "Mama Jean" by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her greatest joy was to be surrounded by her family. She loved playing board games with the children, especially Dominos and you could always expect Gouda Bread before dinner and homemade ice cream for dessert, as she was an excellent cook. She was an avid bridge player and loved her special "bridge girlfriends".
Jean leaves to cherish her memories, the love of her life, husband Hubert W. Garris. She met Hubert, on a blind date and they were married a year later. Hubert and Jean would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this fall. They set a wonderful example of what a good marriage should be.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Peaden; in laws, Andrew and Anna Garris and great granddaughter, Georgia Godwin.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Vickie Garris Hudson and husband, Lynn; son, Hubert Ronald Garris and wife Pam, all of Greenville and Joel Scott Garris and wife Ellen, of Emerald Isle; grandchildren, Amber Hudson Godwin(Preston), Kristen Hudson Skalak(Anthony), Zachary Joel Garris, Ali Hunter Garris, Jordan Tyler Hudson(Blake) all of Greenville and Joel Scott Garris Jr. and Anna Gordon Garris of Emerald Isle;
great-grandchildren, Sailor and Ruthie Godwin, Hudson and Suzie Miller, James Wade Hudson and Hunter Langley; brother, Roy C. Jones, Jr.(Shirley); sister-in-law, Hazel Garris Tripp and brother-in-law Andrew James Garris, Jr. all of Greenville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to "Team Georgia Inc.
