Obituary for Lady Gay Jarvis

Lady Gay Jarvis, 95, passed away at her home in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 9, 2019.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 2:30 pm in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 to 2 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jarvis was born the third of nine children to Milton J. Lloyd and Fanny Sutton Lloyd on the first day of January in 1924 in the Beaver Dam township of Pitt County, North Carolina. She grew up on a tobacco farm with her parents, eight sisters and one brother. After graduation from the local school she visited her oldest sister then living in Virginia Beach where she met her future husband of 56 years Raymond Moore Jarvis. After five years and the birth of three sons, the family relocated to the Greenville area. Just like most women of her time, Mrs. Jarvis worked hard to help provide for her family whether it was working on the family farm or taking a job outside the home. Once her grandchildren were born she developed an interest in photography and was seldom seen without a camera in her hand. Due to her love of taking pictures, she created many photo albums which bought her much comfort and entertainment during her later years. Mrs. Jarvis was also talented with flowers, shrubs and plants of all types. She loved to show off her yard and could name each bush, tree or bloom. While not a natural people person, Mrs. Jarvis was always very loyal and devoted to her family and loved ones. Her granddaughters have many fond childhood memories of her taking them for milkshakes, painting their fingernails and always offering a stick of gum from her purse.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jarvis was preceded in death by her husband and sons, Roy Jarvis and Richard Lee Jarvis as well as her sisters, Evelyn Adams, Dorothy Jones, Ellen Smith and Lillian Coward and brother MJ Lloyd Jr.

She is survived by her son Melvin Jarvis and his wife Barbara of Greenville; her granddaughters Renee Cole and husband Chris, Dee Modlin and husband Todd all of Greenville, Terri Robertson and husband Michael and Kimberly Jarvis all of Charlotte as well as great grandchildren Jacob Costa, Hannah Costa, Emma Jane Cole, Mary Beth Cole, Hayli Modlin and Harper Jarvis. Also surviving are sisters Beulah Ann Parrott and her husband Waverly, Barbara Mayo and Francis Hedgepeth and her husband Rex along with many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Janese Barrett, Brooke Hawkins and Judy Beamon for their genuine and gentle care of Mrs. Jarvis during her last years.
