Obituary for Rev. Stephen Charles Harding

Stephen C. Harding, age 54, passed away Monday, September 9, 2019 due to complications from surgery.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday September 22, 2019 at 2:30 PM at Oakmont Baptist Church with Pastor Greg Rogers officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Stephen was born in Salisbury and spent much of his childhood growing up in Charlotte where he and his family attended Shamrock Drive Baptist Church. Stephen was very active in church; he was a Royal Ambassador, member of the children’s choir, a preschool choir director while in Junior High and played the piano at church on several occasions. In high school, Stephen attended Lasker Baptist Church and was the pianist/organist for a while.
Stephen graduated from East Carolina University with a major in Communication and a minor in English but as Stephen would say, he really majored in Baptist Student Union.

Stephen was heavily involved with the BSU, working summers in a variety of mission jobs in Miami Beach FL and Boone NC, and as a photojournalist with the NC Baptist State Convention. In addition, as if he did not have enough on his plate, Stephen served for 2.5 years as the Youth Minister at Piney Grove Baptist Church near Williamston, NC during his years at ECU.

If Stephen majored in BSU, he minored in Theater while at ECU. Stephen has acted in several productions at ECU and The Message of Easter at Piney Grove Baptist Church, as well as in local community theater in the Greenville, Farmville and Ayden areas. Stephen’s claim to fame though, was his role as “Bear” to Sandra Bullock’s “Tiger Lily” in Peter Pan while at ECU. Stephen’s passion for the arts lead him back to ECU in 1987 to earn a Master’s of Arts in Technical Communication where he created the first computerized writing classroom at ECU. Stephen would later return to ECU as a Lecturer in the English Department in 1997.
God seemed to be grooming Stephen for something bigger.

From his time as a Junior High student directing a preschool choir or being a member of a puppet team at Shamrock Drive Baptist Church to his later years as a leader in the youth ministry and Bible studies at Oakmont Baptist Church, Stephen was beginning to see the connection.

In 1997, Stephen answered God’s calling, which lead him to Campbell University Divinity School where he graduated in 2002.

In 2002, Stephen was offered a full-time position with Oakmont Baptist Church as their Minister of Media and Arts and continued until his death.

In addition to his work at Oakmont Baptist Church, Stephen also served in many capacities at the Magnolia Arts Center in Greenville.

Stephen had several passions and more than a few talents. He loved life to the fullest and was not afraid to try new experiences. Stephen led by doing and not by words alone. We must believe he knew God had his back because he ran into life head on. We are all sad for his passing but for those of us who knew him, we are glad he is now with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:6-9, that he would rather be absent from the body and be present with the Lord. Stephen touched more souls than any one person could hope for and he will be sorely missed but will not be forgotten.

He is survived by his parents, Ben and Charlene Harding of Asheboro, NC; and his sister, April Childers and husband, Berl, of Yadkinville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be given in Stephen’s memory to either: Oakmont Baptist Church, 1100 Red Banks Road, Greenville NC or Magnolia Arts Center, 1703 E 14th Street, Greenville NC.
