Obituary for Valeria Manning Rawls

Valeria Manning Rawls, of 3809 Cecil Street in Bethel, died on Wednesday, June 5, 2019.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday June 8, 2019 at 12:00 Noon in the Bethel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dennis Peay officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service (11:00 AM until Noon). Burial will immediately follow the service in the Bethel Cemetery.

Valeria was born in Pitt County on May 3, 1931, to the late Lillie James Manning and Charlie Leslie Manning, Sr. and was predeceased by her husband, Joe Rawls; brothers, Laddie Manning and Charlie L. Manning Jr.; sisters, Arlene Manning, Lona Manning, Ruby Phillips and Mary James Sexton; sister-in-law, Mary Louise Manning and brothers-in-law Sam Rawls, Floyd Phillips, and Ben Howser.

Survivors include her son, Dr. Scott Rawls; her sister Lona Howser; sisters-in-law, Janie Manning and Ernestine Stalls; brother-in-law, John Stalls; nieces, Kim Mills Evans, Joan Sexton, Carol Davis, and Carla Peedin; nephews, Lee Manning and Chuck Howser; many great nieces and nephews; and her loving, dedicated group of caregivers (Linda Black, Ella Spell, Mary Brown, Stella Moore, Geishala Norfleet, Janice Laughinghouse, and Kim Haggard).

Valeria graduated from Bethel High School and was a secretary at North Pitt High School in the Pitt County School System for 25 years where she was fondly known for her friendly “North Pitt High School, Mrs. Rawls speaking” phone greeting. Each year North Pitt still presents a Valeria Rawls Prominent Panther Award to 6 students exceling in academics and leadership. Valeria was also a loving mother, wife and sister who always sacrificed and went the extra mile to help those around her achieve their goals and dreams. Mrs. Valeria displayed simplistic elegance with a charming wit that endeared her to all she encountered. She was also a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church.
