Obituary for William Curtis Finch, Jr.

William Curtis Finch, Jr., 72, (AI4TN) of Greenville, NC, passed away Friday, August, 12, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with leukemia at Vidant Medical Center. He was born on June 15, 1944 in Tupelo, Mississippi.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Curtis Finch, and his mother, Elsie Floyd Finch of Fayetteville.

He attended 71st High School in Fayetteville, NC and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BS in Political Science in 1966 and immediately transitioned to the United States Navy serving on active duty honorably for four years until 1970. After the Navy he returned to UNC Chapel Hill and earned his Pharmacy degree in 1972.

Bill was an avid hiker and backpacker, spending up to a week with his cohorts, Herb Carlton and Jeff Strickland, on the Appalachian Trail almost annually. For countless years he helped his sons, Matthew and Jeffrey, as they participated in Boy Scouts. He also had a love for dogs, evident in the way that he adored his last three, Parker, Jazz, and Ikea.

Upon retirement, he and Ellen made numerous trips to the National Parks where he pursued his love of photography and the outdoors. Bill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a lifetime member of the UNC Chapel Hill Alumni Association. He shared a passion for amateur radio with his father (W4EHF), both active members of the Brightleaf Amateur Radio Club, and advanced level radio operators. Bill also loved Carolina basketball.

His pharmacy career included REVCO/CVS in Durham, Lumberton, and Greenville, other locations were Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, Neil Medical in Kinston, and the Brody School Of Medicine Pharmacy at East Carolina University in Greenville.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ellen Lashmit Finch of Greenville; his children, Jennifer Finch Privott and husband, Keith, of Edenton, Kimberly Finch O'Rourke and husband, Zack, of Wilmington, Matthew William McGowan of Greenville, and CPT Jeffrey Mark McGowan and wife, Jacqueline, of Killeen, TX; and his grandchildren, Dare Privott, Emerson Privott, Finn O'Rourke, Emma Rose O'Rourke, and Jeffrey Mark McGowan, Jr (JJ).

The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 17th from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, NC. Memorial service to follow.

The family expresses deep appreciation for the loving care received by the staff of 1 East and 3 West, Vidiant Medical Center.
